Invitation for Manuscripts for a special Edition;

The African Journal of Reproductive Health, AJRH (ISSN: 2131-3606) is a peer-review multi-disciplinary international journal that publishes original and high quality research results and review articles in sexual and reproductive health and rights. It is an open access journal, published in English and has extensive readership in all parts of the world. The journal invites authors from both high and low income countries, especially those working on development in Africa, to submit articles for consideration for publication in a September 2016 special edition focussing on “Engendering the Attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals in sub-Saharan Africa”.

In August 2015, the United Nations passed a set of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as replacement for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) aimed at promoting global development between 2015 and 2030. As it was with the MDGs, Africa is also a main target of the SDGs as the region currently has some of the most daunting challenges relating to social development. Since many African countries failed to achieve the MDGs, the question still remains as to how development can be accelerated in the continent. In particular, this is the moment to think of innovative strategies to fast-track development in Africa, so that the continent can do better in implementing the SDGs and other social development milestones in the coming years.
Manuscripts are invited that address this question, especially those that provide substantive data that explain the development paradox that Africa faces. Priorities will be placed on articles that focus on how Africa can act differently in ways to achieve the SDGs.
Articles can take a holistic African perspective but can also focus on specific regions, sub- regions, countries or communities and could be in the form of commentaries, review articles, original research articles, case reports, short reports, work-in-progress or situational analyses reports. In particular, we welcome manuscripts that focus on discussing how any of the 17 SDGs can be attained in Africa as well as on those that report why MDGs succeeded or did not succeed in various parts of the region. Articles submitted should not have been published; neither should they be under consideration for publication in another journal. We will also consider articles that address best practices for building the capacity of relevant stakeholders or target groups for improving the implementation of the SDGs in the African continent. Prospective authors should send their manuscripts as email attachments in Microsoft word format to:; Submissions can also be made through the journal website: Before submission authors should carefully read and comply with the instructions to authors of the journal which are also available at: guidelines. The deadline for receipt of the submissions is March 31, 2016. Submitted articles will be given accelerated reviews and a decision will be forwarded to the author(s) within 3 weeks of the submission. The proof-reading and copy-editing of the special edition will be completed by July 31, 2016, while the hard copies will be available by September 2, 2016.
The special edition will be presented to the general public in Abuja, Nigeria, in mid- September, 2016. The event will be marked with a guest lecture to be attended by high profile policymakers, development partners and NGOs.
